BUCKS HERALD - 10.09.2008 -  fund day tribute

£2000 raised in memory of tragic baby Seth

A charity fun day was held at the weekend to mark the first birthday of an Aylesvury boy who died earlier this year.

It was an emotional event for the parents of Seth Marshall-Rogers, Ben and Karen, who held the event to honour his memory and raise money for a fund they have set up in his name.

More than £2,000 was raised at the event through a bouncy castle, raffles and face painting.

Dance group Kandeez entertained the crowds at the gathering at the William Harding school.

Karen said "We are really pleased with the event and we had a balloon release when all the little ones let on off into the sky, but it was a really positive day. "it was quite emotional at the end of the day, but i'm glad that we did it and it was marvellous to see so many people there to support us."

Seth died earlier this year from an extremely rare condition known as ARX.

He is the only known baby to have suffered from a particular mutation of the disease.

Money raised at the event will go towards research into ARX or helping parents with sick children in a similar position to that experienced by Karen and Ben during the time leading up to Seth's death.

Bucks Herald - 27th june 2008 by Richard Hartley- Parkinson

AT NINE months old, life had barely begun for Seth Marshall-Rogers but after battling against an extremely rare brain condition, he recently died in his sleep with both his parents by his side.
Born in September 2007, he appeared to be a healthy baby much loved by his mother, Karen, father, Ben and three-year-old brother, Bailey.

Four months after he was taken to his home on Swallow Lane in Fairford Leys he started having seizures and involuntary movements. Then it was noticed there were feeding problems and development delay, leading doctors to believe after initial examinations that he had a rare form of epilepsy.

His parents struggled to control it and after many visits to Stoke Mandeville Hospital Seth was eventually ventilated and transferred to intensive care at the John Radcliffe Hospital in Oxford.

By February he was seen by different neurologists who deduced that he had a degenerative brain disorder and told his parents that he would have a few months to live.

After months in hospital they were told that Seth was suffering from a very rare genetic condition called Aristaless Related Homeobox (ARX). Although a few other children have this condition, Seth was the only known child in the world with this particular new mutation. Unlike the other known cases of ARX, Seth had a severe brain atrophy which meant his brain shrank at a rapid rate.

Before he died he was fed through a feeding tube and he lost all the muscle in his body.

His parents and brother wanted to enjoy their last bit of time with Seth and, supported by community teams and the family GP, they brought him home to Aylesbury. In an online tribute to their son, Mr and Mrs Marshall-Rogers wrote: "We came home to enjoy our precious baby boy in the middle of May and were supported by a fantastic team of community and hospice nurses and our family GP. Without their complete support we wouldn't have been able to stay at home.

"During the last few weeks of Seth's life he needed infusion pumps to keep his pain and discomfort at bay. He also had injections regularly. All this could only be done by our amazing community team.

"Seth was our second beautiful son. Bailey loved his brother and Seth responded to that with lots of smiles and giggles. He loved his cuddles and would lay on his daddy's chest for hours.

"He fought every day and would put up with whatever was thrown at him. Sweet dreams baby boy. We only had you for nine months, but every day was precious. You will live on in mummy and daddy's hearts forever.

"We want to thank everyone at the Robins Ward at the John Radcliffe and the Stoke Mandeville community team who have been a great help right up to the end."
